Grants & Funding

We have funding opportunities available throughout the year for New Zealand researchers. We invite enquiries at any time via the contact form below. These will be assessed at key periods during the year.

Our funding covers three broad categories within the field of diabetes research: Basic Research, Clinical Research and Translational Research. The Diabetes New Zealand Research Foundation’s support spans across science, medical and allied health professionals, at different stages of their career. This includes clinicians, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, basic scientists, students and more. The Foundation will support research which is conducted in New Zealand and will benefit those with or at risk of diabetes. Criteria for assessing applications includes feasibility, significance and research objectives. All applications will be subject to the total funding pool available per annum.

The funding we provide comes from a range of sources including significant donations or bequests from:

  • Graeme Douglas Mack Estate
  • Sir Don Beaven Fund
  • Thomas Edward Dawson Estate
  • New Zealand Diabetes Foundation
  • Sir Ralph Norris
  • Dennis Thornton Estate

Submissions are now open for the 2024 Diabetes New Zealand Research Foundation Fellowship. This fellowship supports health professionals and academic researchers to undertake diabetes research in New Zealand. The successful applicant will receive up to $150,000 based on qualifications and research experience. Applications close 5 April 2024. For more information or to apply, click here.
